With vines planted in 1982, our four-hectare vineyard has been producing classic Martinborough wines for nearly 40 years.

A single clone, B95 planted in 1999, the vines are now reaching good maturity.  The goal in the vineyard is to produce a delicate chardonnay, retain acidity, and harvest at lower sugar levels.  To do this we employ substantial shoot positioning, rigorous crop selection and limited leaf removal.  Where possible, all vineyard work is undertaken by our dedicated family members, friends and community.

The Season

The 2017 season was defined as a cool year, with higher than average rainfall and low crop levels.  This helped to retain acidity in the wines, while resulting alcohols were low. This is the first year we have moved to farming without irrigation.

Hand harvested and hand sorted in the vineyard, picking took place on the 01st of April.  In the winery, the fruit was gently whole bunch pressed directly to a Saury French Oak puncheon, and barriques.  Ferment commenced naturally, and was completed quickly at warm temperatures.  The wine remained in barrel for 10 months, on gross lees where partial spontaneous MLF occurred.  Blended in February and filtered prior to bottling in March 2018.

    4.5 / 5

The stylish 2017 vintage (4.5*) is rare – only 900 bottles were produced. Handled in French oak casks (20 per cent new), it is still youthful, with fresh, concentrated, citrusy, slightly mealy and biscuity flavours, showing good complexity, and excellent vigour and length. Best drinking mid-2020+.
